UM Tutorial: Starting a New Student Organization
By: Mike McCormack

The University of Miami is arguably a metaphor for the United States.  In a classic and well known movie by the name of "Field of Dreams" Kevin Cosner makes the connection perfectly: "If you build it they will come..."That too is true at the University of Miami.  If you have an idea for a Student Organization, you can make it a reality.  You can get recognition from COSO, and money from SAFAC.  If you build it, they will come.  UM now has over 280 registered student organizations and your idea could be the next reality.  Even if it's something as rediculous as the Albino Squirrel Preservation Society... yes, it did exist...Here is how to make it happen.  First go to www.miami.edu/coso  Follow the link that says registering a New Student Organization.Click on the link that says download the following documents.  This file contains all of the information and forms that you need to register your new group with the U (via SAFAC) and start recruiting people.  If you have any questions, you can also e-mail coso at coso.studorg@miami.ed or call them at 305-284-5987.  Mention that you heard about registering in The War Canoe and they'll treat you special...Good luck...
